Who Your Email Comes From
The address on the emails your shop sends, where a customer's reply goes, and what verifying your own domain changes.
Settings, General, Email Settings. Three things decide what a customer sees when one of your emails lands in their inbox: the name it comes from, the address it comes from, and where a reply goes.
What a Customer Sees
The name is yours. The address, to begin with, is ours.
An email from your shop arrives looking like this:
From: Your Shop Name <noreply@unifycart.com>
The part a recipient actually reads is the name, and that is your shop. The address behind it is ours, and that is deliberate.
Why the Address Is Ours
An email claiming to come from your domain has to be authorised by your domain, through two DNS records called SPF and DKIM. Mail providers check them on arrival. If we send as you@yourshop.com and your domain has never told anybody we are allowed to, the check fails, and Gmail and Outlook treat a failed check the way they are supposed to: the message goes to spam, or it is rejected outright and never seen at all.
The worst part is that nothing tells you. Your order confirmations simply stop arriving, and you find out from a customer who thinks you never took their order.
Sending as our own address avoids that entirely. It is an address we are authorised to send from, the checks pass, and keeping that reputation good is our job rather than something each shop has to discover for itself.
Where a Reply Goes
To you, never to us.
Replies Go To on the Email Settings page is the address a customer reaches when they hit reply. Leave it blank and we use your store contact address from Store Details, which is almost always the right answer. Set it if you would rather replies went somewhere else, an orders mailbox or a support address.
Nothing a customer sends ever arrives at noreply@unifycart.com. That mailbox is not read.
Sending Under Your Own Address
Two ways, and either one is enough.
Verify your domain with us. A few DNS records added to your domain, which tells mail providers we are allowed to send on your behalf. Once that is in place your emails go out as your own address and nothing else about them changes. Ask us and we will send you the records to add.
Or connect your own mail server. Fill in the SMTP section further down the Email Settings page with your own provider's details. Your mail then leaves through your server under your own authority, and your own address is used.
Until one of those is true, Your Own Sending Address on the settings page is recorded but not used. The page tells you which state you are in: read the Sending Address line at the top of the section, which says what is actually going out today.
What to Check on Your First Test Order
Place a real order through your own shop and look at the confirmation as the customer receives it.
Expect to see your shop's name, our address behind it, and your own address when you hit reply. That is correct and is not a fault. What is worth checking is that the name is right, the logo is there, and a reply reaches you.
